ENVISIONING THE FUTURE
The Brewster Flats Foundation is rooted in timeless and joyful camping traditions and exists to provide world-class recreational and educational experiences in a safe and inclusive community on the shores of Cape Cod Bay.
There is untold and limitless possibility in protecting this precious place - from conservation, to access, to education. We believe that now is the time to re-imagine the future of Camp and realize this future together.
VALUES AND PROGRAMS
RESILIENCE
Camp helps children discover and develop their whole self, cultivate friendships and communities of service, and build confidence and independence. It helps them find and make new friends with people they might not otherwise have met. These friendships, skills, and experiences often stay with children throughout their lives, life long and enrich our physical, emotional, and metaphysical lives in ways we never even imagined. We are deeply motivated to expand the right of all children to develop themselves in this way should it serve them.
INCLUSION
Communities built on respect and integrity support children in their development of identity, awareness, and capacities for compassion and empathy. Camp allows each child to grow independently and as a part of a community of children who bring their own beautiful abilities and physical, social, economic and historically diverse selves and experiences. We seek partnerships and programs that cultivate inclusive behaviors and language practices, and institutionalize equitable decision-making structures rooted in acceptance and access.
NATURE
The benefits of green, blue, and open spaces is well documented and especially potent for children - from improved cognition and physical health, occupational function, social and emotional health, and awareness of environment and behavioral change. However, the health, socio-economic, and emotional burdens that too many children carry based on their race, gender, physical abilities, and income are rooted in systemic injustices that have resulted in unequal access to places like Camp.
As climate change impacts accelerate, our relationship to the precious Cape Cod Bay, freshwater wetlands, sand dunes, and tidal flats is more important than ever. Equally important is reckoning with the erasure of indigenous peoples, knowledge, and stewardship of sacred landscapes like those on Cape Cod. Our aim is to hold space for all ways of knowing and support the relationship of all children to this earth, sea, and sky.
