BFF Shares Intentions with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Stewardship Council

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Stewardship Council is a thirteen member citizen advisory council appointed by the Governor. Brewster Flats Foundation shared the early intentions of the effort during the public comment period of the monthly December, 10 meeting of the council and shared the following statement delivered by Jim Fay, President of BFF:

“Good Morning Council Members, and thank you for this opportunity on such short notice.

I come to you today in pursuit of partnership in delivering on our shared mission of Conservation, Recreation, and Stewardship.

The Brewster Flats Foundation has been organized to carry forward camp-based programming on the sites of the former Cape Cod Sea Camps in Brewster, Massachusetts. After nearly a century of ownership and camp leadership, the Cape Cod Sea Camps has chosen to close operations and sell the resources. Our Foundation is committed to preserving and propelling the Camp into a new century marked by inclusion and conservation in which the site continues to serve and benefit children, families, and the community at large. Our Foundation represents a coalition of volunteers, alumni and families, former staff, and friends of Camp that are committed to preserving and propelling the Camp into a new century.

Given the mission of the Foundation, the resources that the sites possess for Brewster, the Cape, and the Commonwealth, the proximity to Nickerson State Park, and the shared responsibility to steward these precious coastal and wooded resources, we believe there is a significant benefit for the Brewster Flats Foundation to partner with DCR to maximize the abilities of both to provide opportunities for the community to engage with this regions magnificence. Our Foundation possesses the expertise, resources, and determination to deliver increased access to the world-class camping experiences that children have enjoyed at the Sea Camps for nearly a century, on land on by sea.

Our Mission and Vision:

The Brewster Flats Foundation is rooted in timeless and joyful camping traditions and exists to provide world-class recreational and educational experiences in our safe and inclusive community on the shores of Cape Cod Bay.

We are dedicated to forging lasting connections, to the stewardship of our precious location, and to fostering compassion, curiosity, leadership, collaboration, and courage through fun and learning.

Our vision is a Camp that embraces the challenges and opportunities of the next century, creatively establishes new educational partnerships, builds local and professional coalitions to expand access, and honors the simple joys of childhood.

I look forward to connecting with all interested parties.

Thank you.”
